With world Mental Health Day approaching I wanted to highlight the ways in which pets can help us to live mentally healthier lives.
The companionship that a pet offers is a great way to reduce anxiety, stress and depression.
Dogs in particular encourage their owners to get plenty of exercise which can be beneficial for people with depression. Pets can also have a calming effect on their owners and caring for a pet gives your days purpose and a sense of achievement.
Pets and socialising
Walking a dog often leads to more social interaction with others and helps people avoid being withdrawn. People who have more social relationships and friendships tend to be mentally healthier.
Pets and loneliness
Pets are great company and sharing your daily routine with your pet can help you feel less lonely. Pets can be especially valuable for those living alone.
Pets and lowering Stress
Interaction with a pet reduces the levels of cortisol (stress hormone) in your body. And it increases the release of oxytocin—another chemical in the body that reduces stress naturally. That’s why animal-assisted therapy is so powerful.
Pets and childhood anxiety
Welcoming a pet into your home can benefit a child greatly. Owning a pet can teach children responsibility, encourage socialisation and create a sense of anxiety reducing calm. Owning a pet has shown to help children be calmer and even more outgoing.
